Blind auditions continue along as week two of “The Voice” Season 6 wraps up on Tuesday (March 4), with coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Shakira and Usher trying their hardest to fill up their teams. Unfortunately for one, the night ends with the same team count as it began. Let’s get into it.
Up first is 26-year-old rocker Megan Ruger, who uses her rock sensibilities to stand out in Nashville, but says she’s feeling stuck there. She takes the stage with Pink’s “Just Like A Pill.” Right off the bat, there’s a really interesting, throaty quality to the opening verse, that’s matched in quality by her upper register belting. It’s a really terrific audition — which is why it’s a bit of a head-scratcher no one really turns around.
Finally, though, Blake and Usher hit their buttons. Blake tries to play on the Nashville connection, while Usher reminds that she’s clearly not a country singer, no matter where she’s located. After asking which likes ’80s rock more, a distinction Adam throws Blake’s way, Megan teams with the country singer. Turns out that Nashville connection helped out.
Next up is Morgan Wallen, a 20-year-old who was offered a record contract at a very young age. His mom wanted him to have a normal childhood, though, and had him turn it down. He takes to the stage with Howie Day’s “Collide,” and within just a few seconds of his husky rasp, Shakira hits her button. Usher follows behind a bit later, starting a war between the two returning coaches.
Shakira tries to appeal to his ego, while Usher reminds what a stern and effective coach he can be by pointing out moments that need work. In the end, that’s what seals the deal for the coach, as it reminds the singer of his old baseball coaches.
Next to take the stage is James Cavern, a transplant from Vietnam by way of London. He’s hoping a chair turn and success on “The Voice” can help bring around his disapproving parents, who view his music as a poor career choice. Unfortunately, his rendition of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” fails to turn on any of the coaches and he’s sent home, though Usher implores James to come back next season after finding a song that better suits who he is as an artist.
Up next, it’s montage time. Not much to report on here except someone named Music Box made Shakira’s team. I repeat, someone named Music Box. MUSIC BOX. That’s all. Carry on.
Taking the stage next is Emily B., a woman who’s recovered from a rare illness that required brain surgery to bring a terrific performance of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game.” The performance is stunning, easily the best of the night for me. Shakira turns around quickly, followed by Usher and Blake. Adam doesn’t. Why? Because he’s a nerd. Or deaf. Either way, mistake on his end. But his loss is Shakira’s gain, as she lands who just might be my favorite artist of Season 6.
She’s followed by Stevie Jo, a former metal head who’s gravitated towards R&B. He’s taking to the stage with “There Goes My Baby.” You know, singing Usher for Usher. No pressure there. Turns out, though, that Stevie Jo is incredible. He’s just about nails everything in a song that’s difficult and all over the place, range-wise. And what do you know: Usher turns. And he’s the only one. As Adam mouths to Blake, they know Stevie Jo’s gunning for Team Usher. It’s not even worth the fight.
Closing out the night is Audra McLaughlin with the evening’s third incredible performance in a row. She take son Bonnie Raitt’s “Angel From Montgomery” and she sets Adam ablaze nearly immediately. Seriously, he hits his button almost before she begins the song. Blake follows a bit later, with Shakira and Usher turning at the very end. It’s a pretty fierce battle between the four coaches to land Audra, with Adam desperate to earn at least one artist for his team tonight. Sadly for the Sexiest Man Alive, it doesn’t work out and Blake wins. Sorry, Adam. Just take a look in the mirror. That’ll probably cheer you up.
