cheryl cole x factor vid 'The X Factor': Cheryl Cole takes 'a big step' coming to AmericaCheryl Cole isn’t all that well-known in the United States yet, but that’s going to change in the next few months thanks to “The X Factor.” So is she ready to be much more famous here than she is now?

“Not really, no,” Cole said Sunday (May 8) before the American version of “The X Factor” held its first taping in downtown Los Angeles. “I don’t think you can ever be prepared for that, and it’s quite a scary thing.”

Cole is herself a product of reality TV, having shot to fame with the group Girls Aloud on the British show “Popstars: The Rivals.” She was a judge on the U.K. “X Factor” for three seasons and will have the same job in the States, alongside Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and L.A. Reid. She says the move across the Atlantic is “a big step for me.”

“I miss the U.K. already,” she says in the video below. “But I’m such a homebody that this is really good for me to step outside of my comfort zone and push myself. I have a lot at stake myself. I’ve left the U.K. ‘X Factor,’ and I’m in a foreign country, so it’s strange for me. It’s a big deal.”

As for the show itself, she says she’ll try to be just as honest “but in a more polite way” than Cowell is, and that she often goes with her gut in giving would-be stars a chance.

“It’s always that something that you can’t actually explain,” she says. “… Somebody may come in and they don’t have the best singing voice or the best technique vocally, but they have that something — you want to see them again and you really like them or they are cool. I just feel it instinctively.”
