Married life, parenting and successful careers don’t always come hand in hand, yet these “Sister, Sister” twins seem to have found the balance to their work and personal lives.
Zap2it had the opportunity to catch up with Tia Mowry-Hardrict and Tamera Mowry-Housley and discuss what it’s like working on their reality show “Tia & Tamera.
As their first venture into the world of reality television, these ladies had some adapting to do as their transition from scripted to unscripted TV wasn’t exactly the easiest.
Tamara says, “Having your life be in a fish bowl for many years, you kind of want to protect yourself instinctually. So, when you’re doing a reality show, you can’t do that because it goes against what a reality show is.”
She continues, “You have to allow yourself to be vulnerable and just be you and be open to the fact that people are going to praise and people are going to criticize. At first, that was a very hard adjustment.”
And of course there has been criticism directed at the two, particularly towards Tia’s mothering skills and fourteen-month-old son, Cree Hardrict.
“I live in the real world,” she states in response to the public scrutiny. “This isn’t the last time somebody’s going to critique him or pick on him. Everybody has been product of some sort of bullying. Unfortunately, that’s the world we live in… I’m proud of my son. I’m proud of my family, and he’s the biggest joy of my life. He’s the biggest star in my life. Why would I want to hide that?”
But spending great amounts of time working with your family members isn’t always fun and games. Siblings fight, too! What’s the secret to maintaining a healthy familial and business relationship?
“I think once you realize that you are going to have differences, that you’re not going to agree all the time, and mainly just to respect the other person’s opinions.” Tamera advises, “Just respect who they are, and remember that although you disagree, you still have to respect the other person and love.”
Tia chimes in, “My sister and I never go to bed angry. I think that it’s very important for you to really kind of talk out your issues and not allow it to fester and grow because that’s when assumptions take over and that’s when unfinished business becomes an issue… We just like to hammer it out and move on.”
Though, the sisters are very careful of what they showcase on “Tia & Tamera.” Their husbands remain separate from the show as the ladies refuse to document their marriages onscreen.
“My marriage is very important to me, and I don’t want anything getting in the way of that. And I think certain things with your relationship need to remain private and special.” Firmly, Tia continues, “When you’re on a reality show, everything is showcased. It takes away the special qualities that I think is important for any type of marriage.”
Tune in to the “Tia & Tamera” mid-season finale Monday (Aug. 27) at 8p.m. on Style to see how the sisters navigate their lives for yourselves.
