Tim Tebow has two broken ribs, the Associated Press reports. It’s a revelation to New York Jets fans, who were chanting Tebow’s name during the Thanksgiving Day 49-19 loss to the New England Patriots.
The Jets have been criticized for underutilizing Tebow in the backup quarterback position. The controversial player has mostly acted as a punt protector on special teams since the Jets picked him up for the 2012 NFL season.
Frustrated fans at MetLife Stadium chanted for Tebow to replace quarterback Mark Sanchez as the team suffered an embarrassing loss to the Patriots. But there was no way coach Rex Ryan was going to put him in the game.
When it was revealed to reporters after the loss that Tebow had suffered two broken ribs during a previous match against the Seattle Seahawks, Ryan explained the injury seemed to worsen in recent days.
“I was standing there and I was like, ‘I’m not going to play this kid,'” says Ryan. “I wouldn’t play my son in that kind of situation. To Tim’s credit, he wanted to be there for his team.”
For his part, Tebow says he was ready to play. “I had to do a little bit of talking just to dress,” Tebow says. “But I just want to be there for my teammates in case they needed me in an emergency situation.”
