Tom Cruise isn’t letting gossip magazines get away with claiming he’s a bad father. The “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” star is filing a $50 million defamation suit against Life & Style and In Touch Weekly for claiming he abandoned his 6-year-old daughter Suri.
“Tom is a caring father who dearly loves Suri,” Cruise’s lawyer, Bert Fields, says in a statement released today. “She’s a vital part of his life and always will be. To say he has ‘abandoned’ her is a vicious lie. To say it in lurid headlines with a tearful picture of Suri is reprehensible.”
Suri and Cruise’s ex-wife, Katie Holmes, did spend a lot of time together over the summer after the former “Dawson’s Creek” star filed for divorce, but that was due in part to the fact that Cruise was off in Iceland shooting his new movie “Oblivion,” not because he didn’t want to be around his daughter.
Fields has defended Cruise against these claims in the past, saying in a statement released July 19, “Until this week, Tom was shooting a film on location, but he spoke to Suri every day. Tom dearly loves Suri, and the last thing he would ever do is abandon her.”
Cruise and Suri reunited for the first time following his split with Holmes in July, when he flew in to New York City to spend time with his daughter and take her on a helicopter ride. They also went on a trip to Disney World in August. Sources close to the family say Cruise makes plenty of time for his daughter, even if he can’t be around her.
“I can tell you that I haven’t had a meeting with Tom that was not interrupted by a phone call with his daughter,” his friend, screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, tells People.
