Bennett’s anti-war stance is nothing new; Bennett is a World War II veteran who has in the past called the Iraq war a “tremendous, tremendous mistake.” Stern challenged the singer and asked how American should act towards terrorists, specifically those responsible for the attack on the World Trade Center.
“But who are the terrorists,” Bennett replied. “Are we the terrorists or are they the terrorists? Two wrongs don’t make a right.”
Bennett continued: “They flew the plane in, but we caused it. Because we were bombing them and they told us to stop.”
Additionally, Bennett claims that during the 2005 Kennedy Center Honors, President George W. Bush “told me personally that night that, he said, ‘I think I made a mistake,’ regarding the Iraq War.
Bennett’s remarks are no doubt controversial and likely to ignite the pundits on both sides, but — for better or worse — headlines reading “Tony Bennett blames Americans for 9/11” are inevitable.
