tupac shakur biopic auditions los angeles times Tupac Shakur biopic starts online auditions: Just for publicity or the real deal?

The companies behind the planned feature length film on Tupac Shakur’s life have cast a wide net for actors who could portray the slain rapper as he rises to the top of the rap music game.
Morgan Creek Productions (“Exorcist: The Beginning,” “Juwanna Mann”) in association with online production company, Skee.tv/ Karmaloop.tv are conducting an online search for the actor who could portray Shakur in the biopic slated for release in 2013.
“We’re looking for someone with the right mix of raw charm and charisma for the role,” says producer David Robinson. “At this point, we’re more concerned about finding someone with the ability to give their entire heart into the performance than just looks and personality.”
The month-long audition starts today (March 18) in which interested individuals can submit video auditions to www.InSearchOfTupac.com.
“This audition process is a great example of utilizing today’s ever-evolving technology to reach fans and actors around the world to pay homage to a hip-hop legend,” says Skee.TV founder, Scott “DJ Skee” Keeney.
It seems a little strange to us that that actor’s looks are a secondary criteria for the person who will play such an iconic figure, but OK. It remains to be seen if this a publicity stunt to create some buzz around the film and drive traffic to the sites involved, but we’ll just have to see who ends up getting the part.
As far as the creative team behind the film, they’re pretty legit. Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day,” “Brooklyn’s Finest”) is set to direct. The film’s producers include James G. Robinson (“Georgia Rule,” “The Last of the Mohicans”) and it’s executive produced by Shakur’s mother, Afeni Shakur.
What are your thoughts on the audition process? Are you looking forward to the film?
