Nick Jonas stood up for his brother Kevin at Kevin’s wedding over the weekend, and in a couple of weeks he’ll be standing in for a slightly older pop-culture icon: Regis Philbin.
Jonas will co-host “Live with Regis and Kelly” on Jan. 8. That’s six days after he embarks on a tour with his new band, Nick Jonas & the Administration, and a few weeks before the band’s album goes on sale. The “Live” gig will be his first stab at hosting a talk show.
Philbin is on leave from the show while he recovers from hip surgery.
– Starz has given a second-season pickup to its series “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” — a month before the show begins its first season.
The pickup allows the series, which is produced by Sam Raimi and is based on the Roman gladiator who led a slave revolt, to go back into production early next year — and presumably deliver new episodes to Starz sooner than it otherwise would have. It stars Andy Whitfield as the title character and also features John Hannah and Lucy Lawless.
Season two is likely to be titled “Spartacus: Vengeance,” Starz says. Here’s the cable channel’s latest blood-soaked trailer for the first season, which premieres Jan. 22.
– In casting news, former “L Word” star and “24” bad girl Mia Kirshner has taken a recurring part on “The Vampire Diaries,” and Emmanuelle Vaugier is joining FOX’s “Human Target” for multiple episodes.
Kirshner’s first appearance on The CW’s series will come Jan. 21, EW reports. She’ll be playing the wife of Matthew Davis’ Alaric, who’s described as “sweet but dangerous.”
On “Human Target,” Vaugier (“Smallville,” “CSI: NY”) will play an FBI agent who comes into contact with Mark Valley’s high-risk bodyguard, says Fancast. No word on when her first episode will air.
