You know the old adage if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything? Well, as regards Wednesday night’s ratings on the broadcast networks:

Yeah, it was not good. “American Idol” and “Modern Family” were both down from their last original episodes, with “Idol” hitting a season low for its Wednesday show. “Criminal Minds” sank to a series low in adults 18-49 for CBS, and “Arrow” and “Supernatural” were off as well. The premiere of “Family Tools” came in pretty low for ABC. On the positive side, ABC’s “How to Live With Your Parents” improved on last week’s numbers, and “Chicago Fire” was up a little over its last original episode.

Wednesday hour by hour:

8 p.m.

FOX: “American Idol” (10.15 million viewers, 6.5/11 households)
CBS: “Survivor: Caramoan” (9.1 million, 5.8/10)
ABC: “The Middle” (7.3 million, 4.6/8)/”Family Tools” series premiere (5.8 million, 3.7/6)
NBC: “The Voice: Road to the Live Show” (5.6 million, 3.7/6)
The CW: “Arrow” (2.8 million, 1.7/3)

18-49 leader: “American Idol” (2.6)

9 p.m.

FOX: “American Idol” (12 million, 7.6/12)
CBS: “Criminal Minds” (10 million, 6.4/10)
ABC: “Modern Family” (9.5 million, 6.0/9)/”How to Live With Your Parents (for the Rest of Your Life)” (6.25 million, 4.1/6)
NBC: “Law & Order: SVU” (5.7 million, 3.8/6)
The CW: “Supernatural” (2.1 million, 1.3/2)
