“American Idol” prevailed in a crowded 8 o’clock hour Tuesday night, then took a big jump in its second hour to lock up a ratings win for FOX. The numbers for CBS’ dramas and the “Dancing with the Stars” results show, meanwhile, were off a bit from recent original episodes.

FOX led the night with 20.4 million viewers and an 11.7 rating/18 share in households. CBS (13.9 million, 8.8/14) came in second, beating ABC (9.3 million, 5.8/9) by a comfortable margin. NBC (7.2 million, 4.4/7) finished fourth, while The CW could muster only 1.3 million viewers and a 0.9/1.

FOX had a wider lead in the adults 18-49 demographic; its 7.1 rating in the demo was better than the combined total of ABC and CBS, which each scored a 2.9 to tie for second. NBC was close behind at 2.8. The CW drew a 0.6.
