The lowest-rated season of “American Idol” to date ended with the show’s lowest-rated finale to date. The show closed with some of its best numbers of the season, but it’s still about a point behind last season’s finale in adults 18-49.

Also Wednesday, the season finale of ABC’s “Modern Family” drew its biggest audience and best 18-49 rating since late fall, finishing on par with last season’s finale. “The Middle” also ticked up for ABC. The “Survivor: Cagayan” finale was fairly steady for CBS, and NBC’s “Chicago PD” ended its season on a slightly up note.

FOX scored 10.1 million viewers and a 6.1 rating/10 share in households for the night, beating out CBS’ 8.9 million and 5.3/9 for the top spot. ABC (6.2 million, 4.0/7) came in third. NBC (5.6 million, 3.7/6) finished fourth, and The CW (1.1 million, 0.8/1) brought up the rear.

FOX also scored a win among adults 18-49 with a 2.6 rating. CBS took second with a 2.4. ABC drew a 1.8 to finish third, followed by NBC, 1.4, and The CW, 0.4.
