modern family s5 premiere ratings TV ratings: 'Modern Family' premiere down a bunch but still tops Wednesday, 'SVU' premiere risesFast National ratings for Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2013

“Modern Family” reclaimed its spot at Wednesday’s top show among adults 18-49, but its Season 5 premiere was down significantly from last year’s debut.

That was pretty much the theme of the night: The premieres of nearly every returning show came in below their debuts last year. The lone exception was “Law & Order: SVU,” which paid off last season’s finale cliffhanger and rose significantly over its 2012 premiere.

“Modern Family” fell by close to 3 million viewers and more than a point among adults 18-49 vs. last year. “The Middle” and “Nashville” were also off for ABC. New comedy “Back in the Game” pulled OK numbers for its debut, holding most of its lead-in. “Criminal Minds” and “CSI” were each down a little from a year ago for CBS, and NBC’s “Revolution” predictably took a big hit compared to last year’s “Voice”-aided premiere.

On the (small) upside, “Revolution” was pretty much in line with the overnight ratings for its final episodes last season. “The X Factor” also showed some life for FOX, improving on last week’s numbers.

CBS led the night in viewers with 9.9 million and a 6.2 rating/10 share in households. ABC (8.8 million, 5.5/9) edged NBC (8.6 million, 5.6/9) for second. FOX came in fourth with 7.6 million viewers and a 4.6/7. The CW (906,000, 0.6/1) was well back of the pack.

ABC grabbed the top spot among adults 18-49 with a 2.8 rating. FOX took second with a 2.5, and CBS and NBC tied for third at 2.4. The CW posted a 0.3.
