The time-period debut for “The Following” took a pretty big hit Monday. A drop from its NFL-fueled premiere eight days earlier was expected, but the show also fell below its overnight average from last season.

On the other end of the spectrum, “How I Met Your Mother” scored its best 18-49 rating in almost a year and its biggest total audience since December 2011 with its 200th episode. CBS’ other comedies also recorded their season-best ratings, and the Eye captured a win for the night.

The other broadcast nets also had decent nights. “The Bachelor” improved a bit on last week’s numbers for ABC, “Hollywood Game Night” and “The Blacklist” both rose for NBC and “Hart of Dixie” held steady for The CW.

CBS averaged 9.1 million viewers and a 5.5 rating/9 share in households for the night, beating ABC (8 million, 5.3/8) for the lead. NBC (6.7 million, 4.1/6) came in third. FOX was fourth with just under 5 million viewers and a 3.1/5, and The CW (1 million, 0.7/1) brought up the rear.

Thanks largely to “HIMYM,” CBS also led the 18-49 demographic with a 2.5 rating. ABC finished second with a 2.1, followed by NBC, 1.8, and FOX, 1.6. The CW posted a 0.3.
