The opening ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics, which aired live in much of the country, was a huge draw for NBC Friday night and set a hopeful tone for the network’s coverage.

NBC averaged 34.45 million viewers and an 18.1 rating/30 share in households for the night, significantly better than the network’s average for the last Winter Olympics in 2006. Everyone else was left to fight for scraps, with CBS (3.8 million, 2.5/4) coming in second, followed by FOX (3.6 million, 2.3/4). ABC (3.15 million, 2.0/3) took fourth ahead of The CW (2 million, 1.3/2).

The Olympics scored a 9.4 rating among adults 18-49, also better than ’06. FOX was the best of the rest in the demo at 1.5. ABC and CBS tied for third at 1.0, while The CW pulled down a 0.8.
