ABC’s coverage of Saturday’s (June 26) game against Ghana averaged nearly 14.9 million viewers, passing previous World Cup finals and the 1994 round of 16 game between the United States and Brazil to become the most-watched men’s World Cup game in U.S. history. The women’s World Cup final in 1999 had a somewhat bigger audience with just shy of 18 million people tuning in.

The United States lost to Ghana 2-1 on a goal in extra time by Asamoah Gyan.

The U.S.-Ghana match was easily the biggest contest of this year’s tournament, passing the U.S.-England game (13 million viewers) on June 12. Through 50 games played, the World Cup is averaging about 2.8 million viewers, a 60 percent improvement over the 1.74 million at this point in the 2006 World Cup.
