greg berlanti gi USA greenlights Greg Berlanti miniseries 'Political Animals'USA will delve into politics this summer with a six-episode miniseries called “Political Animals.”

The project comes from writer-producer Greg Berlanti (“Brothers & Sisters,” “Everwood”) and producer Laurence Mark (“Julie & Julia,” “Jerry Maguire”) and is USA’s first limited-run series (or “event series,” in the preferred network parlance) since “The Starter Wife.”

It will center on Elaine Barrish, the current secretary of state and former first lady who in addition to her official duties is attempting to keep her family together after a divorce. (Any resemblance to real-life former first lady turned Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is probably not entirely coincidental.) Well-known Washington journalist Susan Berg — who has spent a good portion of her own career gunning for Elaine — becomes an unlikely ally in Elaine’s efforts to keep above water.

Casting has yet to begin, but USA is aiming for a summer premiere date for the show. “Political Animals” marks the first TV project Berlanti has created solo since “Everwood,” though he collaborated on others including “Eli Stone” and “No Ordinary Family.” He also co-wrote last summer’s “Green Lantern.”

Berlanti also has a couple of pilots in play this development season: “Arrow” at The CW and “Guilty” at FOX.
