The former Veronica Mars dad who currently stars on CBS' Flashpoint is definitely on board. "Unless they want Paul Giamatti to play Keith Mars," he joking tells Zap2it. "Do you know what I mean?"
Earlier this month, Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas had said he was in the process of pitching his idea to studios and that he was scrapping the FBI academy idea and was keeping his pint-sized sleuth in college.
Colantoni confirms, "He's picking up right at the end of college."
But getting a greenlighted script may take some doing, and Thomas has his fingers in many pies. He wrote some scripts for The CW's 90210, reworked his matchmaking drama Cupid for ABC and is a co-executive producer on Starz's upcoming comedy series Party Down along with John Enbom, Dan Etheridge and Paul Rudd.
"I think Enbom is actually running Party Down," says Colantoni. "I think they're done with Cupid, and Rob says he's going to go home and write the movie. Now, he's still the executive producer of Party Down, but this is what I heard, that he's actually sitting down and writing the movie."
Colantoni will guest star in Party Down separately from Veronica Mars star Kristen Bell, who was just announced as the show's season finale guest star.
In the meantime, Colantoni is keeping his gig over at CBS as a gun-toting member of an elite tactical unit on Flashpoint and keeping in touch with the Veronica Mars alum occasionally.
"I see Jason Dohring at times," he reveals. "Kristen and I text message each other, but it's hard. She's busy. I'm in Toronto. We text message each other about hockey. She's a Red Wings fan. I'm a Leaves fan."
So there you have it, Veronica Mars fans. Keith Mars is telling you to keep the hope alive.
Flashpoint airs on Fridays on CBS at 9 p.m. ET/PT, and Party Down will premiere on Starz on Friday, March 20.
What do you think? Will a Veronica Mars mystery set on a college campus appeal to studio execs and see the light of day?
