Ladies… what would you do if your boyfriend’s ex showed up on your doorstep just moments after he promised you she was dead?
“And sealed it with an ‘I love you,'” adds “The Vampire Diaries” star Sara Canning when we visited her on set. Her character, Jenna, found herself in an uncomfortable (and terrifying) position in the February cliffhanger, and on tonight’s episode, we’ll finally see the fall-out of Isobel’s arrival.
“Elena’s at the door too, so we’re going to see that be dealt with first,” Canning says. “That’s not going to be an easy explanation to Jenna, I don’t think.”
Jenna and Alaric definitely have a rough road ahead as everything he’s hidden from her comes to the surface. Could their relationship truly be over so soon after he dropped the L-word? “From the cliffhanger I think we can assume that things are going to look kind of bleak,” Canning says. “Maybe they’ll work something out. I can say that Isobel showing up at the door is the beginning of a bit of an unraveling of a few things.”
Though most of the interaction between Alaric and Jenna this season has occurred off-screen, Canning and co-star Matt Davis have filled in the blanks for themselves. “Matt and I have tons of conversations about Jenna and Alaric. What we haven’t seen on screen, him and I have been working to kind of piece together — how their relationship has gotten to the point where he’s saying ‘I love you.’ We’ve seen the fun crazy stuff and a few little falling-out moments, but we haven’t seen on screen a lot of their relationship.”
Canning remains coy on whether the couple will be able to survive this particular blow.
“It’s kind of hard to say what needs to happen now, or what prominent piece of story needs to happen that would fix that. I think we would see some significant Alaric and Jenna time in terms of them addressing their relationship and defining it.”
When Jenna finds out about the vampire reality in Mystic Falls, she’ll be confronted by the fact that she hasn’t been keeping Elena and Jeremy as safe as she thought. They’ve been her priority since their parents’ deaths, and to discover their secret life is sure to rock her boat quite a bit.
“I’ve been… thinking about her character traits and what traits would lead her in the direction of being on the side of Elena and the vampires and what might lead her in the complete opposite direction,” Canning says. “I’ve been really excited to see which way she’s going to go.”
There’s no denying that Jenna is one of the more peripheral regular characters on the show — but she’s got a strong fan following. As we approach that inevitable Mystic Falls tragedy that we’re all buzzing about, a small handful of fans have started a “Viva La Jenna!” campaign that is both passionate and fun. You can catch it on social networking sites like Twitter or Tumblr.
Here’s hoping she remains safe and sound!
We’ll finally get some answers in a few short hours when the episode “Know Thy Enemy” airs at 8 p.m. EST on The CW. In the meantime, watch our video interview with Sara Canning to hear about Jenna’s relationships with John and Elijah, plus her summer plans and more! And, of course, #VivaLaJenna.
