westminster pekingese Westminster Dog Show: New dog breeds not shown much love the first nightThe 136th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show kicked off Monday night (Feb. 13) in New York City’s Madison Square Garden. The groups shown during night one were the Hound group, the Toy group, the Non-Sporting Group and the Herding group.

The only love shown for the six new breeds came in the form of the Xoloitzcuintli being pulled out in the Non-Sporting group.

Out of the Hound group, the 13-inch Beagle, long-haired Dachshund, wire-haired Dachshund, Norwegian Elkhound, Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, Rodesian Ridgeback and Whippet were called out, with the best of group going 1) Cinders the wire-haired Dachshund, 2) PBGV, 3) Whippet and 4) Norwegian Elkhound.

From the Toy group, the Affenpinscher, Brussels Griffon, English Toy Spaniel, Maltese, Manchester Toy Terrier, Miniature Pinscher, Pekingese and Silky Terrier were brought down, with the group order going 1) Malachy the Pekingese, 2) Affenpinscher, 3) Miniature Pinscher and 4) Silky Terrier. Malachy was also the best of the Toy group last year. Perhaps this is his year to win Best in Show.

Out of the Non-Sporting group, the Bichon Frise, Shar-Pei, Dalmatian, Lowchen, Miniature Poodle and new breed Xoloitzcuintli were brought down, with the best of group going 1) Ian the Dalmatian, 2) Shar-Pei, 3) Lowchen and 4) Miniature Poodle.

From the Herding group, the Australian Shepherd, Bouvier des Flandres, Rough Collie, German Shepherd, Old English Sheepdog, Puli and Shetland Sheepdog were pulled out, with the best of group going 1) Captain Crunch the German Shepherd, 2) Bouvier, 3) Old English Sheepdog and 4) Shetland Sheepdog.

So maybe this will be Malachy’s year to win, though we can’t help but root for the Dalmatian because that breed has never won Best in Show. Join us back here tomorrow night for the Terrier, Sporting and Working groups, plus Best in Show.
