“Psych”is about to join the lofty ranks of television shows that have pulled off a terrific musical episode. Here are our Top 5 musical episodes of TV — though we think “Psych: The Musical” might just bump one of them out come Sunday (Dec. 15).
1. “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”: “Once More With Feeling”
This Season 6 offering not only featured terrific music — we may or may not have purchased the soundtrack and sheet music (don’t judge) — but it also advanced several dramatic storylines, as opposed to just being a fun romp with show tunes, which is why it tops our list.
2. “Scrubs”: “My Musical”
This Emmy-winning episode brought “Guy Love” into the nation’s consciousness, but it really won over our Gilbert-and-Sullivan-loving hearts with Dr. Cox’s “Rant Song” (video below). A-mazing.
3. “Community”: “Regional Holiday Music”
You gotta love it when a comedy decides to do a musical episode to poke some fun at another TV show that is all singing, all the time. “Community” had a little fun at “Glee’s” expense — including a song actually called “Glee” — as the “glee club virus” overtook the Greendale students.
4. “Fringe”: “Brown Betty”
Who doesn’t love a good noir detective story? Plus, it’s always fun to see how a TV show chooses to explain its sudden song-and-dance numbers — Walt smoking some “Brown Betty” marijuana and telling a story to young Ella is definitely the best one.
5. “Oz”: “Variety”
This musical episode earns the distinction of most unexpected, since “Oz” was a fairly dark show about men in prison and all the scary things that go along with it. But kudos to “Oz” for thinking outside the box.
Vote for your favorite musical episode below — did we leave out one you think should be on the list? And get excited, “Psych”-Os. The musical premieres Sunday, Dec. 15 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on USA.
