simon cowell demi lovato x factor 'X Factor's' Simon Cowell: NBC is 'mean spirited' and 'tactical' in putting 'The Voice' on three nightsDuring a conference call promoting Season 2 of “The X Factor,” which premieres next week, Simon Cowell and Demi Lovato were asked about Cowell’s recent comments regarding “The Voice” broadcasting three nights during premiere week, thereby overlapping with the “X Factor” premiere by an hour on Wednesday, Sept. 12.

“First of all, I’ve seen the first show. I think it’s sensational. I
think the girls do a great job, the contestants are great, the show
looks different,” says Cowell. “And I think this is the reason why NBC decided to put ‘The Voice’ up against us. It’s a spoiling factor. They don’t want people
to see this first episode.”

“I think it’s mean-spirited and I hope and I
pray that it backfires on them because this is one of the best shows
we’ve ever made,” Cowell continues. “I am pissed off about it. I think of it as kind of a
gentleman’s agreement, but you have to rely that the viewers will make
the right selection. I think three nights in a row [for ‘The Voice’] is too much.”

Mark Burnett, creator of “The Voice,” claims he never even thought about “X Factor” when he expanded “The Voice” to three nights and to that Cowell says:

“Give me a break. Like I don’t know when my show’s going out next
week. Like I said, it’s tactical. It’s very important to get this
message out – they don’t want you to watch this show and I think it’s
gonna backfire.”

As for Christina Aguilera‘s comments that she isn’t sure what Britney Spears brings to “The X Factor” as a judge, Cowell snarks, “Tell her to watch the show, she might learn something.”

Demi Lovato chimes in regarding “The Voice,” “I think the whole situation is a little unfair and I don’t know
why they would do that. But ultimately it’s about finding a superstar
and giving people the chance to win a huge prize of $5 million. That’s
all that I really care about. I’m honored to be on the panel, let alone
on a TV show.”

“The X Factor” premieres Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
