On Sunday (Jan. 29), snowboarder Shaun White became just the third person to win gold medals at five X Games. White scored a perfect 100 on his third and final run in the SuperPipe — a first ever occurrence for the Winter X Games.
“It’s unreal,” White tells the Associated Press. “I’ve been wanting that 100 forever.”
White went for the SuperPipe despite an ankle injury that kept him from the SlopeStyle competition.
“Thank you so much, everybody, tonight,” said White. “I came here on a mission: I couldn’t compete in Slope and it kind of broke me. I didn’t know what to do. I was sitting around icing my ankle wondering if I could even ride tonight, and I kind of took out a little bit of that anxiety and anger that I couldn’t compete in Slope in the pipe tonight.”
