zalman king 2 Zalman King, 'Red Shoe Diaries' director, dead at 69Zalman King, who made a name for himself directing artsy, erotically-charged movies is dead at the age of 69. According to Reuters, King had long been battling cancer.

King started out as an actor playing bit parts on TV before transitioning into writing and directing in the 1980s. His list of credits includes 1986’s “9 1/2 Weeks” starring Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke, 1988’s “Two Moon Junction” and 1992’s “The Red Shoe Diaries,” which went on to be adapted into a long-running series for Showtime.

“[T]he world lost a brilliant and noble soul today,” wrote actor Charlie Sheen on his Facebook page. “My dear friend of 40 years, Zalman King, just lost his battle with cancer. Fought like a recon marine til the bitter end. Say a prayer for his amazing wife Pat and their lovely daughters. Safe travels my friend. C.”
