Zayn Malik at the 2015 Asian AwardsZayn Malik has stayed quiet in the weeks since announcing his departure from One Direction, but he finally has broken his silence on Twitter. The 22-year-old Brit posted a message of thanks to his personal account that’s aimed at unnamed people close to him.

That message led to some confusion from fans, which Malik cleared up — though probably not the part of the tweet they were expecting. He explained why he tossed an “x” on the end of the thank you, since his followers didn’t understand its purpose.

One Direction announced Malik’s departure from the band in a Facebook post on March 25. During the singer-songwriter’s hiatus from social media, 1D put out the first tour poster without Malik on it. Other band members like Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson have spoken out about their former colleague’s exit.

Following the announcement that he was leaving, Malik did speak to UK newspaper The Sun about his decision. “I feel like I’ve let the fans down but I can’t do this anymore,” he said. “It’s not that I’ve turned my back on them or anything, it’s just that I just can’t do that anymore because it’s not the real me.

“I did try to do something that I wasn’t happy doing for a while, for the sake of other people’s happiness,” Malik continued. “It is crazy and wild and a bit mad … but at the same time I’ve never felt more in control in my life. And I feel like I’m doing what’s right — right by myself and right by the boys, so I feel good.”
