aliya mustafina gabby douglas summer olympics 2012 Summer Olympics: Aliya Mustafina earns first gold for Russia; Gabby Douglas fails to medal on uneven barsGabby Douglas took to the women’s gymnastics arena for her first individual apparatus final Monday (Aug. 6) at the 2012 Summer Olympics, but failed to earn a medal. There were two things working against her bid.

During her routine, Douglas had a break in a time around the bar and had to go the wrong way around, then add a skill in order to get her back facing the correct way for her transition to the low bar. She ended up with a 14.900 for eighth place out of eight.

The other factor working against her was the absolutely flawless (and incredibly difficult) routines the other competitors posted. Gold medal winner Aliya Mustafina, silver medalist He Kexin and bronze medalist Beth Tweddle all had higher degree of difficult values than Douglas, and each performed very well. Even Douglas’ 15.333 qualifying score on bars would have only put her in sixth place.

Tweddle had a couple steps on her landing and may have earned a gold for Great Britain if she’d stuck it, but instead Mustafina brings home the first gymnastics gold of these games for the Russian women. Kexin’s silver also marks the first gymnastics medal for the Chinese women.

Douglas will have another chance at an individual medal Tuesday when she takes the floor for the balance beam finals. She’ll be joined by U.S. gymnast Aly Raisman on beam and then Raisman and Jordyn Wieber will also compete on the floor exercise finals.
