The 2012 Summer Olympic Games kick off in London with the Opening Ceremonies, which take place live in London starting at 9 p.m. local time/4 p.m. ET. However, the U.S. Olympics fans will just have to wait until coverage starts at 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT on NBC.

But “Today” show correspondents Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira have a sneak peek for viewers

“It’s quintessential Danny Boyle … he’s quirky and eccentric, a loud soundtrack,” says Meredith. “And it’s a very quintessential British show. There’s a lot of humor and a lot of heart.”

“It also highlights the different national identities of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, which is very important. It will be a very different experience for the people sitting in the stadium as opposed to the people sitting at home,” adds Matt.

And while Matt and Meredith can’t reveal too much, they do say the final Olympic torch bearer will be a great surprise.

“It’s going to be a huge surprise,” says Meredith.

And Matt cracks that “right after the torch gets lit, Meredith gets lit.”
