FOX is beginning to announce the cast for their “24” reboot, “24: Legacy,” and on Monday (Jan. 25) it was revealed that the new male lead has been found — “Straight Out of Compton” actor Corey Hawkins, according to The Wrap.
Replacing the star character of Jack Bauer, made famous by Kiefer Sutherland, Hawkins will play Eric Carter. FOX co-president and CEO Dana Walden says that there will also be a big female role to cast as well.
“The lead is Eric Carter, he is clearly a significant focus of the show. There is also a female co-lead who is a former head of CTU. It doesn’t feel like it is fully replicating the original in terms of how much Jack Bauer carried by himself, but it’s a very prominently-featured lead.”
In the pilot, the Carter role is described by FOX as being “smart and strong.” and even though he came from a rough background, was able to turn his life around while serving as an Army Ranger. After returning back to home life in Virginia with his wife, Nicole, who has yet to be cast, he will undoubtedly be called back into perilous action very soon.
But does the really mean no more Jack? And the end for Kate Morgan? ““Never say never, but right now [they are] not [returning],” says Walden. “There’s a time jump, this is a new organization, a new CTU, a new cast of characters. It’s a completely different story in terms of the special ops group we’re focusing on.”
While replacing such an iconic an loved character will be tough shoes to fill, Hawkins is a formidable choice. A Juilliard-trained actor who broke out into the Hollywood scene with his portrayal of Dr. Dre in “Compton,” he’s also known for what now looks like will have to be a grim ending for his character on AMC’s “The Walking Dead” and will be featured in the upcoming movie, “Kong: Skull Island,” with Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson.
