The cast of "Shadowhunters"

ABC Family, soon to be Freeform, is excited about the premiere of their upcoming series “Shadowhunters.”

An adaptation of the “Mortal Instruments” series, they gave a tease with the “Making Of Shadowhunters” special. For those wondering about just how hard it is to put together a fantasy/sci-fi-supernatural series with an ensemble cast, the behind the scenes tease gives a good look at the different departments that all have to be at one hundred percent in order to make a show like this work.

For the uninitiated, the “Shadowhunters” series tells the stories of half human, half angels who fight demons in order to protect “mundane” humans. Also in the mix are vampires, warlocks, werewolves, and magical runes, which give the shadowhunters superpowers like flight, speed, or strength.

The program is a cross between “Harry Potter” and “Agents of SHIELD,” with plenty of teen romance thrown in for good measure.

Essentially, it blends all of the things that make for good Young Adult fiction. Really, it doesn’t look like any elements of YA fiction are missing from this stuffed-to-the-gills series, which has an ensemble cast like most procedural shows — though there’s sure to be even more romantic tension between these characters than the soapiest nighttime dramas.

Between Clary (Katherine McNamara), Jace (Dominic Sherwood), Simon (Alberto Rosende), Alec (Matthew Daddario), Magnus (Harry Shum Jr.), and Isabelle (Emeraude Toubia), the romance could be accurately described as a “love octagon,” but in real life, there’s not much sexual tension — everyone seems to be pretty tight as pals and pals alone.

And the cast and crew promise that even “The Mortal Instruments” fans will wind up enjoying the ride. It sounds like the final episodes will have some serious cliffhangers in store. Unfortunately, they don’t give many hints at what those big twists could be … except for “who will Alec wind up with?”

Watch “Shadowhunters” on Jan. 12 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Freeform (formerly ABC Family).
