Beyond “Agent Carter” exploring the character of Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), it’s unclear where exactly Season 1’s plot is headline. It seemingly was about the hunt to find Howard Stark’s (Dominic Cooper) stolen creations, but they were recovered in Tuesday’s (Jan. 13) episode.
It’s a question James D’Arcy, who plays Jarvis, found himself asking when he got the scripts. “This show is theoretically about they’re going to find Howard’s bad babies, so we thought we’d find one a week and we found them all last night,” he acknowledges to reporters at the 2015 TV press tour. “So now what’s the show, because we have five more episodes to go?”
In true Marvel fashion, no answers were given by the cast and producers. But D’Arcy did offer that “now is really the beginning of what the show is, and it’s going to take us — and you, hopefully — in really exciting directions.”
There are many twists coming that the cast didn’t anticipate, though they played mum on what they are. No one would comment on whether or not seeming good guys like Sousa (Enver Gjokaj) and Angie (Lyndsy Fonseca) are secretly villains, and neither would anyone tease if “Nikita” alum Fonseca would get in on the action.
Chad Michael Murray did say that his antagonist character Jack Thompson has a “dark past” that is being played with. Executive producer Stephen McFeely also refers to D’Arcy’s Jarvis as the show’s “Our Man Friday.” As for the maybe-romance between Sousa and Peggy, Gjokaj does acknowledge, “He’s the only guy who sees her for what she is. He might not see her fully yet.”
At the end of the day, “Agent Carter” is all about its title character. “The key to all of this was Hayley,” executive producer Jeph Loeb says. “There was no ‘Agent Carter’ without her participation.”
