Matt Willig Lash

Former NFL offensive tackle Matt Willig will be causing trouble in “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” Season 3 as new Inhuman Lash.

TVLine has the casting news, plus the confirmation that Willig is going to have some makeup work done to him. “We worked with Glenn Hetrick (‘The Hunger Games’), who we worked with last year on Raina, and he and his team do great work,” executive producer Jeffrey Bell tells the site. “They’ve been working with our makeup effects and visual effects people to come up with something that’s pretty cool!”

Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb announced the inclusion of Lash in the new season at San Diego Comic-Con, and though Willig’s character seems to be more of a villain, it’s unclear if he is friend or foe. Bell tells TVLine that Lash “has a fairly strong opinion about what should happen to Inhumans,” but he still remains a bit of a mystery.

“What’s nice about him is he’s a wild card,” Bell tells the site. “You don’t know why he is doing this — Does he have an agenda? Is he on somebody’s side? So we’ll be teasing that out over some episodes.”

When Season 3 picks back up, Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet) and Mack (Henry Simmons) partner up to try to track down Inhumans who transitioned after the spread of the Terrigen Crystals. When a similar situation happened in the Marvel comics involving a Terrigen Bomb, Lash took it upon himself to find those Inhumans affected and determine whether or not they’re worthy of their abilities. He could be filling the same role here.

“He’s going to shake things up,” Elizabeth Henstridge told Zap2it at the 2015 summer TV press tour. “It’s going to be a huge spectacle. We’re so honored to be able to have him in the show. It’s just huge. I can’t even explain how crazy it’s going to get.”

“Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” Season 3 premieres on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
