Sometimes, life can throw you some curve balls. Three years ago — 13-year-old Lori Mae Hernandez expains — a difficult one was thrown at the Hernandez family. Her father became stricken with bell’s palsy which made the nerves in the side of his face go numb. No longer able to express himself like he used to, Lori’s father seemingly lost the ability to smile.

It was this event that set her on the path to Tuesday’s (June 14) episode of “America’s Got Talent.” Faced with this challenge, shy Lori took it upon herself to begin writing jokes with the goal of making her dad smile. In the process, she learned just how powerful some jokes can be. Not only was she able to get the reaction from her father she was looking for, she achieved a sense of confidence she never thought possible.

Three years down the comedy road and the young girl appeared before Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Mel. B. and Howie Mandel. Showcasing her comedic skills, Hernandez immediately had Mandel in the palm of her hand. While her routine is a short one, her play on words and joke setup was impressive. Stating how her own experience as a baby doesn’t qualify her to be a baby sitter, Hernandez closed her routine with this brilliant nugget of wisdom:

“That’s like saying, ‘Hey you’re sick a lot. You wanna be my doctor?’ Or, ‘Weren’t you a host of a reality show? You wanna be President of the United States?” Something tells us, Miss Hernandez has a bright future ahead of her.

“America’s Got Talent” airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
