Proving once again that if you take any song and have a cover artist sing it slowly it gets really creepy, the first footage from the upcoming season of “Bates Motel” might just leave you running to mommy.
The teaser for Season 4 has Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) looking more and more like the “Psycho” we know he’ll become — and mother (Vera Farmiga) looking increasingly like an ill-fated attic resident. The clip will air Sunday (Jan. 17) during the Critics’ Choice Awards.
Zooming in through the infamous peephole-pecked walls of the Bates Motel, the clip shows a loaded gun, Norma falling down a horrifying spiral, and Norman screaming “No! Mother!” as he reaches for her. The spiral then becomes represented by a string of pearls, falling down a drain. As the somber singer asks “Where did our love go?” the camera pulls back to reveal blood pouring down that drain — a clever nod to Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic shower scene.
“We all go a little mad sometimes,” reads the tagline, a direct quote from the lips of Anthony Perkins as grown-up Norman. Renewed for Seasons 4 and 5, A&E hasn’t officially said that “Bates Motel” will be wrapping things up at that point. However, with Season 4 of the prequel series dropping so many teases that seem to be building a bridge to the 1960 classic, it seems like the writing may be on the blood-splattered wall.
