Are you having a hard time getting through “Supernatural’s” winter hiatus? It’s understandable. What’s going on with Dean after murdering all those people? How are Crowley’s mother issues coming along?
It’s a long wait until January 20 and no one expects you to make it that long without a good dose of the Winchester brothers. To help you cope with those joneses Zap2it scoured the web for some of the best “Supernatural” fan fiction — yes, you read that right. Fan fiction.
Below is a good sampling of the most popular ships and genres to fill that Winchester need. Or maybe it’ll inspire you to write your own hunter inspired musical. Maybe Sam and Dean will show up at the production. Stranger things have happened.

There was never going to be a fan fiction list without mentioning the show’s most popular ship. Jeremy Carver may not let Dean and Castiel give in to that sexual tension, but luckily there are a ton of very talented “Supernatural” fans who have described how that should go in delicious detail.
“Children of Man” by Tajjas ( — Castiel was an angel. He was…unaccustomed…to dealing with mortal limitations. Unfortunately, the demons who bound him for sacrifice didn’t particularly care. And the Winchester boys weren’t helping a great deal either. Set between episodes 4.08 and 4.09.

“God Ships Destiel” by mtothedestiel ( —  God ships destiel, and while he’s not willing to mess with free will, that doesn’t mean he won’t hit below the belt. Enter Gabriel and some archangel related hi-jinks, all in the name of true love and destiny.

“How a Righeous Man Raises a Rose” by swordofmymouth (LiveJournal) — AU in which the apocalypse and angels and demons never happen, and Sam and Jess and Dean live together in a suburban lifestyle — and then suddenly, nothing is alternate universe at all. Told from Sam’s POV. Dean is compelled to tend a dead rose garden, if only Dean could remember why; and remember why it is so important.

The Apocalypse
Season 5 was filled with such turmoil. It pitted good against evil and no one was sure if the Winchesters would make it out alive, which makes it a golden period to set fan fiction in. Relive the angst with the fics below.
“Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?” by kelhome ( — Tag to 5.03. Sam has a plan to keep Lucifer from using him. Dean has a better idea.

“I Wait Now Only for the Wind” by vail kalgami (LiveJournal) — Sam never said Yes to Lucifer. Adam, however, did. And Sam’s humanity is lost anyway. As is everyone else’s.

Alternate Universe

Love the characters of “Supernatural” but want to see them outside of the Impala or doing something besides hunting monsters? For the imaginative of the fan fiction readers, check out these fics that put the Winchesters in some crazy non-“Supernatural” situations.
“If I Knew Then What I Know Now” by What You See in the Shadows ( — Given an opportunity to change his family’s destiny, Dean Winchester finds himself back in 1983 as his four year old self, yet with his adult memories still intact. But can he alter the events of that tragic night? And if so, will young Dean, his family, and Castiel be ready to survive all the evil that destiny has in store for them? pre-series AU
“It’s All in the Details” by Colleen ( — When Dean goes to sell his soul at the crossroads to bring Sam back, someone else steps in to negotiate the deal. Cas did get a sign and it sent him off into the past to change things. AU from “The Man Who Would be King” and “All Hell Breaks Loose.”

One of the best things about “Supernatural” is that the show knows how to make fun of itself. Naturally some of the best fan fiction also knows not to take itself too seriously. If you’re looking for some Winchester inspired giggles to help deal with the heartbreaking angst served up above, here you go.
“A Hiccup in Time” by sammygirl1963 ( — The Winchesters go on a hunt for a demigod who can manipulate time. The hunt backfires on them leaving Sammy in a toddler form with his adult mind still intact. Can John and Dean protect little Sammy until he is returned to his adult form? Angst/Comfort

“The Hunter’s Guide” by MrSpockify ( — A guide to everything about hunting, by Sam, Dean, and Castiel.

If actual fan fiction isn’t your thing, don’t worry. You can always relive the 200th episode — entitled “Fan Fiction” below. Otherwise, carry on wayward sons.
