Freeform’s breakout hit “Beyond” is still airing its first season, but the show took a unique approach by also releasing its entire first season on the Freeform app, for online binge watchers.
While the show isn’t exactly breaking ratings records for live viewers, it’s an entirely different case with online viewers: The show accrued over 14 million multi-platform views in the first seven days, 25 percent of which accounted for people who binged the entire 10-episode first season — in one sitting!
That’s what we call an incredibly binge-able show.
As for the cast, they’re loving the fact that fans can watch their entire first season online, given that a few of them are avid bingers themselves.
“I love binge watching,” Jeff Pierre — who plays the similarly named Jeff McArdle — says: “That’s how I watch everything, especially with these Netflix original series like ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘The OA.’ That’s literally how I love to watch TV now. Especially if it’s a show like ours, that’s addictive… I mean, you’re hanging on the edge of your seat at the end of every episode.”
There’s definitely something to be said for sci-fi shows and their ability to keep you watching from one episode to the next. The mystery of “Beyond” and the struggles alternate-realm protagonist Holden Matthews (Burkely Duffield) gets drawn into create the perfect feeling of suspense that keep you clicking through to the next episode.
While most of the cast agrees binge-watching it the best option, not everyone is a natural binge-watcher.
“I personally can’t sit still that long. That’s asking me to sit still for ten hours,” Romy Rosemont, the Matthews family matriarch says. “But it’s worked for [Netflix], they just keep getting more and more and more programming.”
There’s no doubt that Beyond’s wildfire streaming success played a huge part in getting them such an early renewal. Only three episodes had aired live before Freeform ordered a second season for their newest sci-fi/fantasy show. One has to wonder whether Freeform will make this same move with more of their programming, as TV in general seems to be shifting towards streaming platforms instead of live viewing.
“Beyond” airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Freeform. The entire season is available for streaming at Freeform.go.com.
