It’s not often that you think of the phrases “Big Bang Theory” and “sexy time” as belonging anywhere near each other, but now the veteran CBS sitcom is making headlines by bringing together two characters who’ll be having sex for the first time.

Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) have been seeing each other for quite some time on the show, but have stopped short of taking things to the next level — until now. According to the show’s producers, in the Dec. 17 episode the couple will be getting down to business.

“After over five years of dating, we felt the time was right for Sheldon and Amy to finally consummate their relationship,” executive producer Steve Molaro says on the network’s website. “We’re so excited for the audience to see the journey over the next several episodes.”

Affectionately known by fans as “Shamy,” the “Big Bang” coupling has proven a popular one, as has their abstinence. The upcoming episode will undoubtedly change both characters, especially since they are currently broken up on the show after Amy got tired of Sheldon not paying enough attention to her — right after he bought her an engagement ring she didn’t (and still doesn’t) know about.

It should be intriguing to see how the audience reacts. But this much is clear: “Sexy Sheldon” is about to become a meme.
