Britney Spears is coming to the Marbella! The pop queen announced the news that she’ll be guest starring in Season 2 of “Jane the Virgin” on Twitter on Tuesday (Aug. 11), which was confirmed by The CW shortly after.
“Jane” showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman says that nabbing Spears, who will be playing herself as Rogelio’s (Jaime Camil) nemesis, is dream casting.
“We are so thrilled that Rogelio’s ‘nemesis’ — Britney Spears — has agreed to appear on ‘Jane The Virgin’ in episode 205,” she says in a statement. “Personally, after hearing about their long-standing feud (from Rogelio’s point of view), we are eager to hear Ms. Spears’ side of the story, which we assume is quite different. #TeamBritney.”
The reason the show pursued Spears at all is because they heard that “Jane the Virgin” is one of her favorite shows.
“Jenny and the studio went after Britney after they heard it was one of her favorite shows of all time,” CW president Mark Pedowitz tells Zap2it. “To Britney’s credit, she agreed to come and do it.”
Snyder expanded on how Spears was interwoven in the “Jane the Virgin” world.
“We’re really excited. We have a backstory — it turns out she’s a real nemesis of Rogelio’s. But the quality of their interaction is a little bit in dispute between what Rogelio thinks and what Britney thinks, that’s what I can say about that rivalry,” Synder says at the TV Summer Press Tour. “We knew that Britney was a fan of the show. We had already written some stuff that Rogelio had said about Britney … so when we found out she was a fan, we said, ‘Would you please, plese be on the show?’ and happily she said yes.”
Rogelio was just regaining his position back as the most popular actor in telenovelas at the end of Season 1, so it’ll be interesting to see how Spears’ appearance will throw a wrinkle into those works. If there’s one thing Rogelio can’t stand, it’s not being the brightest star in the room.
While Rogelio probably won’t be excited to see Spears, Camil tweets his happiness that she’ll be coming to set.
“Jane the Virgin” Season 2 premieres on Oct. 12 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on the CW.
