tim minchin californication 'Californication's' Tim Minchin turns Judas for 'Jesus Christ Superstar'Zap2it: Are you gearing up for Broadway’s “Matilda” after writing the music and lyrics?

Tim Minchin: “Matilda” has been going in London for a year and three months, and won more Olivier awards than any other show and now the nerve-racking [part] of seeing what Americans think of it. It opens officially on April 11th.

Zap2it: How did you come to “Californication”?

Tim Minchin: My manager told me about this guest role. Given that I spend my life half pretending to be a rock star, and my character on “Californication” is pretending to be a rock star — if I can’t get this role, I have got nothing to say. And I wanted to have a good go at it.

Zap2it: Are you more of a musician or an actor?

Tim Minchin: I haven’t acted much. I always thought of myself as an actor still even though no one else agreed at that time. I have been sort of thinking, “I wonder if it is over for me actingwise,” and so I really had a go at this script.

Zap2it: What’s next for you?

Tim Minchin: Playing Judas in “Jesus Christ Superstar.” I always wanted to play Judas. It is opening in my hometown of Perth (Australia) on the 31st of May. It is where I grew up and understudied Judas in my teens — twice I understudied. For me, that is the incredible thing about the show — it is the secular retelling of Jesus Christ’s last week of life from Judas’ point of view.
