During the summer season, the television outliers tend to come out of the woodwork. Some of the more interesting programs are born during these doldrums and Sundance is taking a chance with their new unique science fiction project, “Cleverman.”
The six-episode series has a pretty intriguing looking cast — a few notable names that pop out are Iain Glen (“Game of Thrones”), Frances O’Connor (“The Missing”) and Deborah Mailman (“The Sapphires”) — and delves into some very real-looking subject matter.
The story being told is set in the future, but it’s also deeply rooted in ancient Indigenous Aboriginal culture. “Cleverman” explores a life that finds these evolved beings — called Hairypeople — trying to survive in a world full of humans. As one might expect, things don’t go over swimmingly.
“I have a huge love of superheroes and comics. It got me thinking about creating something cultural that my young son could connect to on a superhero basis,” says creator Ryan Griffen. “I wanted to bring something Aboriginal, Indigenous, to that world. As the son of a light-skinned Aboriginal man and a light-skinned Aboriginal woman, it was important for me that my son had a cultural superhero that he could look up to as a young Aboriginal person … something he could connect to that was also entertaining.”
Zap2it got an exclusive peek at the series through the below 15 photos. Between these and the above trailer, we’ve got a sneaking suspicion that Sundance is out to leave a big impression once the show airs.
“Cleverman” will premiere Wednesday, June 1 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Sundance.
