After being involved in just about every aspect of her last series, Jennifer Love Hewitt is now of a different mind.
Now a first-time mom with husband Brian Hallisay — who was one of her co-stars on “The Client List” — the veteran of such other shows as “Party of Five” and “Ghost Whisperer” is content just to focus on acting.
She does that in Wednesday’s (Oct. 1) season premiere of the CBS drama “Criminal Minds,” joining the series for its 10th year as Kate Callahan, an accomplished agent who becomes the newest member of David Rossi’s (Joe Mantegna) Behavioral Analysis Unit team.
“I had no idea that they were looking for someone,” Hewitt tells Zap2it of succeeding Jeanne Tripplehorn in the “Minds” lineup. “I met with Erica (Messer, the show’s executive producer), who I have known since I was 14 or 15, since she worked on ‘Party of Five.’ She just said, ‘Hey, we’re adding a new character and we think this would be a good fit for you.’
“At the time, I was really in the midst of being a new mommy and honestly not even thinking about what my next job was going to be,” Hewitt notes. “This is totally a different thing than I’ve ever done before — and one of the first projects I haven’t also been a producer on, putting it together from the word ‘go’ and shouldering all that responsibility. It’s sort of nice to be able to go to someone else’s house as a guest and play by their rules.”
Hewitt allows that balancing work and her parenting of 10-month-old daughter Autumn is “crazy, but totally doable somehow, It’s really a day-by-day thing, but we’ve been lucky to get a really great kid who is easygoing and allows both Mommy and Daddy to have a life and an existence besides being her parent.
“And this really is the perfect job for it,” adds Hewitt, “because I get to do what I love, but I also get to pop back and forth and be a mommy. It’s great.”
