Season 2 of “Daredevil” may not be out until 2016, but the cast spent Saturday (Oct.10) with a couple thousand fans at New York Comic Con 2015. Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson were present, along with new cast members Jon Bernthal and Elodie Yung, who are playing fan-favorites Frank Castle/Punisher and Elektra, respectively.
Before hearing from Bernthal and Yung, showrunners Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez discussed how they always want “Daredevil” to deliver on fan expectations. “A lot of what we were doing last season in the writer’s room was wondering about the ‘saturation of superheroes,'” says Marco Ramirez. “But we realized there was a place for something dark, something sophisticated. So, you wanted dark — here’s Elektra, here’s Punisher.”
“We love Matt Murdoch, and we love the world that Matt Murdoch navigates,” says Petrie. “And now with the Punisher and Elektra, we can take it further, and darker. We’re fans, and we know what you want to see, we want to see, and we can’t wait to show it to you.”
“It’s intense, it’s exciting. I can’t be more happy, really,” says Yung, who is a black belt in karate and practices muay thai, so no fears about whether or not she can do the part of Elektra justice. She says when she was cast, she was asked about action sequences, and she responded, “Yes, basically I can kick your a**.”
Jon Bernthal says he realizes the mythology of the Punisher and what developing Frank Castle/Punisher means to the fandom. “I know how important this character is to [the fans] and how important the show is, and I know how important he is to law enforcement and the military, and I look at this as huge honor and huge responsibility. I give you my word: I’m going to give everything that I have.”
In fact, when asked if he’s recognized on the street yet, Bernthal says 15-20 times a day he hears “you better not mess this up, man.”
Yung has not been recognized yet, but that’s not going to be the case much longer.
“Daredevil” Season 2 premieres on Netflix in 2016.
