As Toronto-based teen soap opera “Degrassi” enters into new territory on Netflix, the new trailer shows fans that many things will stay the same.
Its new iteration, named “Degrassi: Next Class,” includes students from its last season on Teen Nick: Lola, Zoe, Grace, Shay, Zig and Frankie. Much like 1987’s “Degrassi High” and its spin-off “Degrassi: The Next Generation” in 2001, the latest reboot is rife with teen angst problems that stem from parents, goals, love, bullies, drugs or sexual identity.
In the dramatic first trailer, the show still goes there. It teases kissing, heartbreak, career decisions and a life-threatening illness for the teenagers that are also juggling classes and team practices.
The cult Canadian drama was scooped up by Netflix earlier this year soon after its cancellation on Teen Nick. The streaming service announced that the series will have 20 new episodes in the upcoming season.
“Degrassi: Next Class” begins streaming Jan. 15 on Netflix.
