Because new ideas are dead and leaving original masterpieces alone is a thing of the past, ABC is creating a three-hour musical remake of the beloved movie “Dirty Dancing.”
Starring as “Baby,” the role made iconic by Jennifer Grey in the 1987 original movie, is Abigail Breslin (“Scream Queens”), and based on the character description, it sounds like they are not veering from the storyline. According to Entertainment Weekly, Breslin’s role is “an innocent young woman in the early 1960s who vacations with her affluent parents and siblings in the Catskill Mountains and falls for the resort’s working-class dance instructor.”
No news has been announced as to who will be playing that world-class instructor, Johnny Castle, but those will be some big dancing shoes to fill for whatever actor takes on Patrick Swayze’s famous role.
Live original musicals on TV have proven to do well with audiences — NBC has gotten huge ratings its annual musical. However, “Dirty Dancing” will not be performed live, nor have any other versions of the movie been successful. Anyone remember the sequel “Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights”? Or the TV series that starred Patrick Cassidy and Melora Hardin?
The premiere date is still yet to be announced.
