Before Season 9 of “Doctor Who” premieres, fans will have the opportunity to visit movie theaters to watch a prequel minisode titled “The Doctor’s Meditation.” While the plot of the short is still unknown, BBC America has released two stills from the prequel that could mean a regeneration is in the Doctor’s near future.
In one of the images, the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) is with a new character named Bors (Daniel Hoffmann-Gill), who will also appear in the Season 9 premiere. In this particular scene, the Time Lord holds a chalice that may look familiar to fans of the show.
As Radio Times points out, the chalice is identical to the one featured in the 2013 minisode “The Night of the Doctor,” which introduces William Hurt’s War Doctor. In the six-minute short, the Eighth Doctor (Paul MgGann) drinks from the chalice on the planet Karn, initiating his regeneration.
What’s the Doctor doing with it now, though? While it’s entirely possible he could be preparing to regenerate, it’s highly unlikely. But a return to Karn isn’t out of question, and neither is the Doctor coming into contact once more with the Sisterhood of Karn — the group that gave him the regeneration elixir in “The Night of the Doctor.”
Clare Higgins, who appeared as Sisterhood member Ohila in the minisode, is returning to the series in Season 9. Details of her character are being kept under wraps, but she may very well be playing Ohila once again.
In the meantime, fans will have to wait to find out why the Doctor has that chalice. “The Doctor’s Meditation” debuts in theaters on Sept. 15.
