Peter Capaldi on 'Doctor Who'

Of course you’re still upset that “Doctor Who” decided to get rid of the sonic screwdriver for something as silly as Ray Bans and showrunner Steven Moffat hears your rage. Unfortunately for you, he just doesn’t care all that much.

In a video released by the BBC, Moffat says, “Sometimes you have to be heretical. Sometimes you actually have to embrace the heresy. And I just thought, really, on a whim, why would the Doctor feel wedded to a screwdriver?”

He continues, “Also it maybe resurrected the original joke which we’ve sort of slightly forgotten. That the screwdriver was just a screwdriver that made a noise and it’s gradually become this all-purpose everything.”

Moffat’s not wrong about the original version of the sonic screwdriver, but in the nearly 50 years since, it’s become so closely associated with the show that swapping it out for sunglasses makes no sense.

Besides, the decision to dump the screwdriver seems like it was made just to mess around with fans, as Moffat says, “It’s fun to be naughty.”

Hopefully this particular bit of naughty is only temporary. According to Moffat, “I know some people get incredibly irate about it, and I’m sure the screwdriver will show up again someday.”

At this rate, someday isn’t going to be nearly soon enough.
