Get excited, “Empire” fans. There may soon be a spinoff in the works and it might be taking a closer look at Cookie Lyon’s (Taraji P. Henson) life before Lucious.
“I think that there is going to be a spinoff from ‘Empire,’ without question,” creator Lee Daniels tells the 2015 TCA summer press tour audience. “There’s so much ripe story — we’ve talked about it in the room already — about Cookie’s family, what makes her her; Lucious’ family, what makes them them. That in itself is fascinating to me and stuff that I can relate to.”
To a smaller group of reporters, Daniels says that he has to write what he knows and he definitely knows Cookie Lyon’s backstory.
“I have to tell a story that I know — OK, here she is now, but how did she get to where she’s at right now?” says Daniels. “Let’s go back and understand her mother, let’s go back and understand her sisters, let’s understand the makings of her. That I know because I know Cookie.”
Daniels confirms that a spinoff would probably be a prequel, but he admits that they aren’t quite there yet. Right now, Daniels is focusing on both “Empire” and his new FOX pilot, “Star,” about a multi-racial girls group in Atlanta.
One thing he does know, however, is that Henson could “absolutely” play Cookie in a prequel.
“She could play younger herself,” Daniels agrees with Zap2it. “She could play younger herself, absolutely.”
“Empire” returns Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
