“Airplane mode. Road trip mode. Stuck-in-the-subway-for-20-minutes mode. Your favorite stories are now available for download any time.”

… and with that, Netflix announced on Wednesday that various titles would now be available, not just to stream, but to download to your personal device. Starting… immediately.

You may freak out in 3… 2… 1…

“While many members enjoy watching Netflix at home, we’ve often heard they also want to continue their Stranger Things binge while on airplanes and other places where internet is expensive or limited. Just click the download button on the details page for a film or TV series and you can watch it later without an internet connection,” Netflix said in a statement.

So simple.

So overdue.

Netflix download

So amazing.

But before you grab your laptop and a hard drive and plan on dumping all five seasons of “Breaking Bad” into your permanent library, there are a few noteworthy details hidden in the Netflix announcement:

Put The Laptop Down… For Now

Per the release, the download feature is currently only available for phones and tablets on Android and iOS. No word on when – or if? – the ability to download on your laptop will be included.

Kitchen Sink: Not Included

While there is no shortage of movies and series (originals included!) to download right away, the new feature doesn’t apply to all content just yet. Netflix says there is “more on the way.”

The Download Has Gone Bad

Milk. Medicine. Makeup. Manufacturer warranties. Go ahead and add Netflix downloads to the list of things we love that come with something we don’t love — an expiration date. So how long will you get to hang on to your new toys? Depends on the title. In perhaps the most important takeaway from the news, some downloads may expire in as quick as 48 hours.

Define Your Download

Netflix is offering two different download versions – standard def or HD. “Standard quality is a slightly lower video resolution that requires less storage space and takes less time to download,” according to the platform. “Higher quality is a higher video resolution that requires more storage space and takes more time to download.”

It’s Not An Upsell

On the bright side, the download functionality is available to all customers, on all plans, with no additional charge.

Feel free to resume your joyous freakout…
