On HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” Melisandre isn’t exactly known for her sense of humor. If you have the misfortune of meeting the Red Woman, there’s a good chance that you’re desperate, your army is on the verge of being wiped out, you’re about to die — or in the case of Jon Snow, you already have.
Behind the scenes, however, things appear to be quite different. Because on Wednesday (June 29), actress Carice van Houten may have made the funniest cast-member social media post since Emilia Clarke got down to Tupac.
In what is definitely a contender for the Top 10 Most Controversial “Game of Thrones” Scene on a show filled with controversial scenes, Season 5 had a memorable moment where Van Houten’s Melisandre talked Stannis Baratheon into burning his only child alive at the stake. In the recent season finale, the Red Woman is still dealing with the fallout, as Shireen Baratheon (the girl burned alive) was close friends with Ser Davos Seaworth — who is now threatening to execute Melisandre for the murder.
In real life, however, things aren’t nearly as heavy. In her Twitter pic a (rarely-smiling) van Houten cuddles up alongside Kerry Ingram, the young actress she burned at the stake. The photo seems to have been taken when Ingram was killed off, and van Houten is presenting the young actress with a box of Duraflame fireplace logs.
“Awkward farewell presents,” she tweets.
Van Houten, who is dating actor Guy Pearce, clearly has a great sense of humor. Which is important, because if there’s one place where we could all use a Duraflame log it’s Westeros, the land where winter always seems to be coming.
