A behind-the-scenes featurette from “Game of Thrones” Season 5 takes fans inside one of the show’s most dramatic scenes of the year: The fight at Daznak’s Pit.
In the climactic sequence from the penultimate episode of Season 5, the Sons of the Harpy swarm Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) in a rebellion after she reopens the fighting pits in Meereen. When it seems like all hope has been lost, Daenerys’ dragon Drogon swoops in to save the day, flying her away from the danger.
Actors Iain Glen, Nathalie Emmanuel and Clarke all praise director David Nutter for the execution of the scene. The behind-the-scenes video shows the trio having to act opposite a green screen and tennis ball during the high-stakes sequence. When watching Clarke act against nothing during an emotional scene opposite Drogon, it’s easy to see why the Television Academy nominated her for another Emmy.
“If you don’t care about what you’re watching, you’ve got nothing, and I think that without the integrity of the characters and getting in there with the camera and understanding their emotional journey, without that it’s just pretty pictures,” Nutter says.
“Game of Thrones” is available for digital release on Monday, Aug. 31. The Blu-ray and DVD will hit stores on March 15, 2016.
