With the return of “Gotham”
comes the introduction of another character “Batman” comic book fans may recognize. Former “Homeland” and “Firefly” star Morena Baccarin will guest star on the show as Dr. Leslie Thompkins, though the character will be different from what fans might remember.
“We’re not sticking too close to the original mythology,” Baccarin tells Zap2it
. “I think they kind of want room to put her in different worlds and different scenarios right now and we’re trying to figure out what that’s going to be.”
In the comics, Dr. Thompkins is rather close to Bruce and Alfred. In the case of “Gotham,” she’ll be working at Arkham Asylum and spark up some manner of relationship with Jim Gordon, who’s been demoted to keeping guard over the facility.
That begs the question of the nature of their relationship. After all, Barbara has left Jim for the time being and is shacking up with her former lover — and Jim’s workplace rival — Renee Montoya. That leaves Gordon free to explore his options a bit.
When asked if things will get romantic between Jim and Leslie, Baccarin responds with a sly, “Maybe.”
One aspect of the character that is likely to remain from the comics is Dr. Thompkins’ connection to the late Thomas Wayne. As portrayed previously, the two were close friends.
“I do think there was a connection there,” Baccarin says. “We haven’t delved into that part of my character yet, so I’m not sure how that’s going to play out.”
“Gotham” returns Monday, Jan. 5, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
