The return of Shondaland’s “TGIT” kicked off on Feb. 11 with the winter premiere of “Grey’s Anatomy,” which was directed by Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington. “The Sound of Silence” kept Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) mute for three quarters of the episode after getting beaten nearly to death by a patient and needing her jaw sewn shut.
But really, Shonda? Why did it have to be Meredith getting violently attacked? Why not Maggie (Kelly McCreary) or Jo (Camilla Luddington)? Hasn’t Meredith been through enough? And haven’t audiences been through enough of watching her almost die when every time viewers know that she’s not going to?
Props to Washington for taking a creative approach to showing this episode from the frustratingly silent point of view of Dr. Grey, but it was a tedious premiere to get through. Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April (Sarah Drew) are still arguing about their divorce, the tension between Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Meredith continues to grow and Karev (Justing Chambers) still runs to Meredith’s side without even thinking about Jo. Overall, this was a throw away episode that neither moved the plot forward nor changed any character for better or worse.
The best part of this episode was the moment all three of Derek and Meredith’s kids were shown on screen together. This is a moment that fans have been wanting to see for a long time, and as expected, they are all absolutely adorable. Zola, Ellis and baby boy Bailey entered the screen with Karev, and while the scene was heartbreaking for Meredith, who couldn’t actually speak to her kids and therefore they were terrified of her, it was awesome to see all three Shepherd babies.
